Things I carry all times at school and work | Work and Education

I tend to forget what I need with me constantly. That way I get bored much more easily, drain my phone battery or stay thirsty all day. None of them are good options. So, this post is for myself and any other person that might want a what-to-bring list.

(Yeah, sometimes a list like this is an absolute must-have.)

A book I’m reading

Currently it’s Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi (tomorrow it will be something completely different because I only have like 50 pages left, but still). But I always have some kind of book that I’m interested in and they are mostly physical copies because I prefer to actually hold what I’m reading. If you like reading on a phone or a Kindle you can do that too, but I have found that most people’s eyes get tired sooner if they are looking at a screen.

If I don’t have a book with me I go absolutely crazy, even if I don’t really have the time to do anything with it.

Water bottle

I don’t care if I will have the option to just buy a bottle of water or if I can drink from a tap in one of the bathrooms. I am not willing to leave the house without some water. Chapped lips are an awful symptom of dehydration which is something that I’m trying to avoid at all costs. Plus it’s simply a good thing to stay hydrated.

I prefer to leave the water in the fridge overnight with a couple of lemon slices in it, so the next day it will have a little bit of flavor. And some more vitamins. You can do the same with apple, strawberry, or basically any fruit that you like.

Phone

Just an absolute must have at all times. I don’t think an explanation is needed.

Headphones

I’m the kind of person that doesn’t like to stay alone with their thoughts for too long. Because of this, I can’t bear to not work on something actively or occupy myself all the time. Hence the blog, but I digress.

Music is one of the best ways to stop myself from overthinking, but podcasts are also a good option. I’m not going to recommend audiobooks because they aren’t my style, but if you like to listen to them on the way to somewhere go for it.

Essentials

ID (+ driver’s license if you have one) and keys. You’re supposed to have these with you constantly either way, so it’s best if you just have it with you all the time. It doesn’t matter if you’re just going to the grocery store to pick up a single thing or staying out for an entire week. Keep the essentials with you.

Some cash

I have a hard rule that I need to have enough money to be able to buy a bus ticket at the very least. That way I won’t be stuck somewhere and I won’t stay hungry either, because I can easily buy a granola bar or something.

On another note, I don’t carry all the cash I have on me. I’ve found way too much money dropped on the streets and they have been a great lesson.

A knife

Fine, this is not a must-have, but I’m kind of paranoid and tend to get into situations where I need to cut rope or cut up a roll to make a sandwich on the go. My favorite is a small Swiss knife that also has a can and bottle opener, a spoon and a fork on it. But I also have a knife that has a carrier that can also act as an insanely loud whistle.

Then I have my pretty knives that I just like to keep around. A black karambit with a red scorpion and a really small pocket knife that was hand-made by a family friend.

    1. Oh yeah, that’s definitely more useful when you want to defend yourself. But knives can be used in survival situations, plus I go fishing regularly where a knife is an absolute must-have.
